City details
Wrocław lies on the Oder River in western Poland and is a city of water: it has about a dozen islands and more than a hundred bridges and footbridges. For centuries it was a city of many nations, and until 1945 it was the German Breslau. After the war it was settled almost from scratch by Poles, many of them from Lwów. Its huge Market Square with a Gothic town hall is one of the largest in Europe, and on Ostrów Tumski a lamplighter still lights the gas lamps by hand every evening. The city is also full of small bronze dwarfs, more than six hundred of them. They are a nod to the Orange Alternative, an anti-communist movement that used painted dwarfs as its symbol. Today Wrocław is a big center of universities, IT and engineering.
