City details
Łódź lies in the very heart of Poland and is one of its largest cities. Its name literally means boat. In the 19th century it grew from a small town into a great center of the textile industry. The old cotton mills, the factory owners' palaces and the red-brick buildings still give the city its character. Łódź is full of old tenement houses, and its Piotrkowska Street is one of the longest shopping streets in Europe. A tram stop on Piotrkowska has a colourful roof, so locals call it the Unicorn Stable. Since 2019 a unicorn statue has stood next to it, and the unicorn has become a small symbol of the city. The city is also home to the famous Łódź Film School, where Roman Polański, Andrzej Wajda and Krzysztof Kieślowski studied. That is why people call it HollyŁódź.
