Kraków is one of the oldest cities in Poland and was its royal capital for more than five hundred years. Polish kings were crowned and buried in the cathedral on Wawel Hill. Under the hill is the cave of the Wawel Dragon. In the legend, a clever shoemaker beat the dragon with a sheep stuffed with sulfur, and today a metal dragon statue at the cave breathes real fire. The Main Square is one of the largest medieval squares in Europe, and every hour a trumpeter plays a bugle call from the tower of St. Mary's Basilica and stops in the middle of the melody. The old town was on the first UNESCO World Heritage list. The Jagiellonian University was founded here in 1364, and Copernicus studied there. Today Kraków is also a large center of IT and international business.
